University of Strathclyde begun in 1796 as the Anderson’s University which (very radically) was open to everyone, regardless of gender, class or income. The equal opportunities have been associated with the university ever since. Since 1964, the university has called the University of Strathclyde. Today, Strathclyde is the third largest university in Scotland and the UK’s largest provider of postgraduate and professional education. Its main campus, where the Workshop will be held, is in the city centre, just 5 min from the main square (George Square).
Glasgow is one of Europe’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities, with a distinctly contemporary feel to it; tartan is worn with panache and the scotch often comes with a twist. Our world famous welcome and friendliness of the people are what you will remember.
Glasgow is Scotland’s cultural capital and one of the most dynamic cities in Europe for its patronage of music and the arts. Home to Scottish Ballet, Scottish Opera and one of Europe’s finest civic art collections, Glasgows’ reputation as a European City of Culture is well founded. Art & architecture in Glasgow are synonymous with Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the father of the ‘Glasgow Style‘ and leading light of the art nouveau movement. The architectural legacy of Mackintosh is a must for any visitor to Glasgow.
Come the evening, the delegates will be looking to enrich their visit by experiencing a taste of Scotland, or enjoying world class international cuisine in the many bistros, restaurants and brassieres on offer across the City Centre, West End or Merchant City. From award winning seafood restaurants to the best curry houses in the UK, dining in Glasgow is relaxed, affordable and always enjoyable.
To visit Glasgow is to experience Scotland with style. Glasgow is hip while still retaining its legendary friendliness. Glasgow is a shopper’s paradise and was voted Britain’s top retail destination after London’s West End in the Experian 2004 Retail Ranking. The main shopping thoroughfare, Buchanan Street, has been voted one of the world’s top retail destinations.
The pristine splendour of the Ayrshire coast and Robert Burns country, and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs - the gateway to Scotland’s world-famous Highlands - are less than an hour’s drive from Glasgow. Scotland is the home of golf, and some of the world’s finest Open championship courses such as Royal Troon and Turnberry are just an hour away from the city. Sample a dram in some of Scotland’s celebrated whisky distilleries, or visit some of our hauntingly beautiful castles - all within easy access of Glasgow.
Glasgow International Airport, serving more than 100 destinations, is 8 miles from the city centre. There are 17,000 rooms to suit all budgets and the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre is the UK’s largest integrated meeting venue.
